Frequently Asked Questions
What is mold?

Mold is defined as any of the various fungi that often cause the disintegration of organic matter.

What causes mold?

Because mold spores are naturally occurring in our environment, they cannot be entirely eliminated from our homes. In order for mold to grow, it requires a spore (like a seed), a food source (organic material such as paper, wood, and hundreds of others), a source of moisture (water) and time.

To control mold growth indoors, the only variable that can be controlled is moisture. Detecting and eliminating sources of water intrusion into homes is critical to the process of mold remediation.

Our expert team will help you locate and eliminate the source of water intrusion. We can also provide guidance on how to limit exposure for future occurrences. We use state-of-the-art technology to assist us in this process.

How do I know if I have mold?

Mold is generally found because you can see it or smell it. You may also suspect it exists due to resulting health consequences experienced by you or occupants of the home or workplace.

What does mold look like?

Mold is a furry or woolly growth on the surface of organic matter. It takes on many colours, forms and shapes.

When is mold toxic?

There are thousands of known types of mold. Some are toxic to humans when experienced in high concentrations and others are harmless. Our experts can help you determine the potential health risks of mold in your home or business. Call today for a free consultation with one of our experts.

Where does mold typically grow in a home or work area?

The most common areas that may have mold in your home may be anywhere that unwanted moisture can accumulate such as bathrooms, your kitchen–especially in your refrigerator, floor tiles, ceiling tiles, window sills and more. If you think that you may have mold in your home, contact us.

What can I spray on drywall to kill mold?

Never spray anything at active mold colonization. Mold spores are hydrophobic and become airborne when attacked by an aerosol spray. It is a common myth that there is “a spray that kills mold on drywall.” Mold spores can only be killed by incineration. Otherwise, to eliminate mold spores, they must be removed, collected or trapped. Non-porous surfaces that do not provide a food source for mold (like concrete, metal, glass) can be cleaned and salvaged. However, porous surfaces impacted by active mold growth must have the mold physically removed by way of removing the contaminated material. Antimicrobial agents or mold inhibitors are chemicals that deter or retard the growth of mold while water is removed from a structure. These products DO NOT kill mold spores regardless of the claims on their labels.

Can I clean up the mold myself?

Always consult a professional before proceeding with home mold remediation efforts. When mold problems are minor, international remediation guidelines provided by The IICRC (Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification) require experts to instruct the public on how to remediate the problem themselves. As part of our on-site consultation package (when circumstances dictate that the problem is minor), our team will provide specific advice to homeowners on appropriate home remediation techniques.

What is asbestos?

Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous mineral. It has thin, needle-like fibres that, when inhaled, can imbed deeply into the lungs and cause health issues. Asbestos is a light, durable, flexible, sound resistant, fire retardant and durable material that has many attributes which lead to its inclusion in numerous building products. Products containing asbestos are often referred to as Asbestos Containing Material (ACM).

What products have asbestos?

Many products that at one time contained asbestos are either no longer in use or have been replaced; however, some asbestos-containing products, such as friction materials and cementitious drainage pipe, continue to be imported into the province of Alberta. Some examples of the types of products that contain asbestos include:

  • Vinyl asbestos tiles
  • Floor levelling compound
  • Plaster or drywall jointing materials
  • Insulation
  • Fireproofing spray
  • Asbestos-cement siding panels

Will asbestos harm me?

If inhaled, asbestos can become trapped deep in the lungs and, over time, lead to health issues including Lung Cancer, Asbestosis and Mesothelioma all of which can be fatal. These conditions can manifest many years after exposure to asbestos. However, if asbestos is undisturbed and not being inhaled, it does not pose an immediate health risk. As such, many building materials containing asbestos (ACM) left in place and undisturbed are not considered a health and safety risk even in public spaces.

Construction activities that cause a disturbance to these ACMs need to be appropriately managed to prevent asbestos fibres from becoming airborne. Emergency construction activities such as those associated with unplanned disturbance to asbestos must be carefully managed to prevent accidental exposure.

Can I remove asbestos myself?

Asbestos removal, often called asbestos abatement, is regulated by the health and safety protocols of the jurisdiction. In Alberta, the removal of ACM is regulated by the Alberta Asbestos Abatement Manual. The manual outlines all the steps to removing asbestos safely. Workers or individuals who remove asbestos must have a minimum level of education to remove moderate and low-risk forms of asbestos and must have a government-issued certificate to remove asbestos considered high risk. In Alberta, all asbestos removal projects must be reported to the government 72 hours prior to the start of the asbestos removal. Many worksites are routinely inspected to ensure the safety procedures outlined in the Alberta Asbestos Abatement Manual are being followed.

How do I know if there is asbestos?

You can assess the materials used and research the time frame in which those materials were installed. If the material was installed before 1993 and is a material that commonly contains asbestos, laboratory samples will be needed to determine whether there is asbestos. It is recommended to contact an Industrial Hygienist to assist with collecting asbestos samples for laboratory analysis.
